First of the Fallen

Many characters from The Horus Heresy forged legacies that stretch into the 41st Millennium. Few had quite such a massive and lasting impact as Luther, the subject of Gav Thorpe’s new novel.

Luther: First of the Fallen will be coming your way in October and will delve into the character and motivations of Lion El’Jonson’s closest friend – and bitterest foe – like never before. Here’s the story’s blurb to whet your appetite.

Who better to write about this legendary hero of the First Legion/treacherous wretch* than Gav Thorpe, author of many Dark Angels tales encompassing the Horus Heresy and Warhammer 40,000? We caught up with Gav to get his thoughts on why he jumped at the chance to write about the master of the Fallen.

Gav: It was a very pleasant surprise when Black Library editor Jacob asked if I’d be interested in writing a book on Luther for the Horus Heresy Character series. We sat down to discuss what that meant and within 30 seconds ideas were already bubbling through my head for the overall structure (interrogations by a parade of different Supreme Grand Masters), what sorts of scenes and arcs I wanted to include, and how we’d tie it up with interstitial sections. I’ve worked on many Dark Angels books in both the Horus Heresy and the 41st Millennium, and Luther – along with perhaps

Cypher – is the living continuity between the Legion of old and the Chapter of the present. The chance to use him to explore Caliban’s past and the journey of the Dark Angels over the last ten thousand years was too good to pass up. And to tell the tales in Luther’s own words was a delight as both a writer and fan. That’s one of the great strengths of the Character series – telling stories from the distant past that resonate all the way through the Imperium’s history and continue to shape current events.

Thanks, Gav! You’ll be able to pre-order Luther: First of the Fallen in limited edition format on Saturday the 24th of October. You can catch up with the story of Luther, the Lion, and the First Legion in the Horus Heresy series – check out Descent of Angels, Fallen Angels, The Lion and Angels of Caliban for some key events.
