We’ve talked about the incredible new models in the Blood Bowl: Second Season Edition box, the streamlined rules, the history of the beautiful game, and how the updates affect your current collection. Now, we turn our gaze to another fun bit from the upcoming rule book – the new artwork, of course!
Blood Bowl has its own style, quite apart from the other games set in the worlds of Warhammer. At times, it can be wild, funny, and full of character, but it’s nearly always gory and violent – just like Blood Bowl itself.
This piece, which you may recognise, sets the tone for the new edition. The style’s sketchy, yet well defined, and it never takes itself too seriously.
Ever wonder what happens behind the lens of the CAMRA?* Let’s just say we hope this chap is getting hazard pay…
Cabalvision subscribers demand in-your-face action, and for the most part, they get it. Speaking of faces, we love the expression on that goblin – he clearly enjoys his job. So does this fella a few pages later, counting up his earnings.
If you’re well versed in your Blood Bowl history, you’ll recognize him as Nikk Threehorn, the scoundrel who bankrupted the NAF and caused the biggest shake-up in the history of Blood Bowl. This image captures his perfidy perfectly. Compare that with this moody piece here…
This poor Elf, down on his luck, gives you a sense of what life is like for these players. It’s only glorious when you’re winning and the gold is flowing, after all... As it must be for this Imperial Nobility player!
He may be a little roughed up, but you should see the other guy! As long as you win, the pain is only temporary. Little vignettes and portraits, combined with some gems collected from previous editions and Spike! Journals, including this happy Nurgling, really bring the setting to life.
The book is full of art that adds context to the action, telling us more about the wider world in which these games take place. The Blood Bowl universe is a special place, and the over-the-top art highlights the fans, players, and stadiums like never before.
If you haven’t already done so, you’ve still got time to pre-order the Blood Bowl: Second Season Edition box or a copy of Blood Bowl – The Official Rules. No matter which way you get it, you’ll treasure the book for years to come.
* CAMRA is named after the Campaign for Real Arcanery. This coterie of wizards mastered the technique of trapping a soul inside a box and broadcasting everything it sees through the Cabalvision network of crystal balls and magic mirrors installed all across the Old World.
