Step inside a Necron tomb world with art and lore from Kill Team: Pariah Nexus

With Kill Team: Pariah Nexus right around the corner, this is the perfect time to take another look at the history of the region, and think about where things are headed next. Let’s dig in.

What is the Pariah Nexus?

Regular readers of Warhammer Community or fans who read the Necrons codex will know a bit about the Pariah Nexus already, as this region of space has been a big focus of late. For the rest of us, here’s the short version.

Within the Imperium Nihilus exists an area of silent space – a dead zone discovered by the Indomitus Crusade as they explored the darkness of the Noctis Aeterna. No contact could be made with the planets inside, the reason for which soon became apparent as Imperial forces arrived.

What’s creepier than an unending tide of murderous automatons? This isn’t a trick question, we’re really not sure if anything is

The Necrons had arisen in heretofore unseen numbers, bent on nothing short of galactic domination. Planet after planet was revealed to be awakening tomb worlds, now transformed into hellish alien landscapes, disgorging legions of deathless robotic warriors.

The scale of clashes across the sector ranged from titanic to squad-by-squad skirmishes.

Taking the action underground

One such tomb world, formerly a mining commune designated Vertigus II, now bore a network of colossal rib-like pylons stretching high into the atmosphere. These were made of noctilith, an incredibly rare substance also known as blackstone, valuable for its ability to becalm or enhance the mysterious powers of the warp. Their presence belied a vast subterranean structure, far larger than other recorded examples.

Are those... the spindle drones from Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress? What are they doing in this picture of Necrons?

These xenos structures proved to be almost entirely impervious to orbital bombardment and long-range artillery. An anonymous Inquisitorial missive advised deploying kill teams, armed for close-quarters breaching actions, to infiltrate them and burrow down to locate and destroy their power source from inside.

What the Space Marines encountered inside would push their implacable resolve, and their very sanity, to the limits of their transhuman endurance.

Flayed Ones are the black sheep of the Necron family, in no small part due to their questionable fashion choices.

Dark shapes stirred in the sepulchral gloom, the eerie green light of the Necron machinery glinting on slick gore and metallic armour plates.

The extended cover art reveals the full scope of the claustrophobic battles, bathed in the green light of Necron constructs.

Space and time itself seemed to fluctuate, twisting and rippling with a sickening fluidity. An increasingly desperate conflict ensued, as Space Marines and Necrons fought through a labyrinth of incomprehensibly-arranged tunnels, hunted by the maddened xenos and, indeed, the very structure itself.

What’s next?

The Kill Team: Pariah Nexus expansion will let you play out these thrilling events with games of Kill Team, using a new set of rules for engagements in ultra-close confines. You’ll even be able to replicate the Necron tomb using the new game board and scenery. Stay tuned over the next couple of weeks as we explore the box contents in greater detail, plus some of the new rules for each faction.
