The fast-paced combat of the revamped Kill Team rewards quick decision-making and a good head for strategy, with some of your most important decisions coming before any models have touched the tabletop.
Whether you’re playing a tightly competitive matched play game or continuing your narrative play campaign, the mission your kill teams are deployed on will play a major part in both who you choose to bring along and how they’re deployed. With that in mind, we’ve picked out a few scenarios so you can do some reconnaissance and develop some strategies before Kill Team: Octarius pre-orders go live on Saturday.
A critical defence battery lies silent, and a daring kill team must infiltrate enemy lines to reawaken the guns’ machine spirits. Can they break through the firewalls and take control of the installation’s core, or will their enemies win the race and shut down the defences for good?
Awaken the Data-spirits sees both kill teams attempt to breach servers in the centre of the killzone, forced to control objectives perilously close to each other while their comrades race to shut down firewalls. Commanders will find a balanced mix of hardy and fast operatives critical to success, as a sudden dash to deactivate a firewall can mean the difference between winning and losing.
To score victory points in this mission, operatives will need to achieve multiple objectives simultaneously, but caution is advised – deactivating a server may score you a victory point, but if you don’t also hold the connected server, it may come back to bite you.
A cache of ancient and powerful technology has been found, and two kill teams race to secure the priceless artefacts. However, each must be carefully removed from its resting place, and operatives too busy carrying their prize around may find themselves the victim of a deadly ambush.
Commanders used to holding static objectives will be faced with a new challenge in Secure Archeotech. In this mission, scattered pieces of technology can be prised from the ground and carried around the killzone as operatives fight to keep as many in their possession as possible. Particularly fast and agile models will be vital in keeping objective markers away from the enemy, forcing your foe to send their operatives into your lines.
Elite kill teams will need to carefully consider which objectives they pursue with their limited number of operatives, while those with plentiful manpower will need to keep their individually weaker members safe from an errant sniper’s sights. Of particular value will be operatives with the ability to quickly scale or move through terrain, such as the Kommandos’ Breacha Boy or Space Marine Reivers, who can dart through the ruins at high speed to snatch objectives away from their opponents.
Two kill teams advance on an area of vital strategic importance, neither willing to give ground to the other as they clash at close quarters. Forced together as the mission escalates, which one will emerge victorious when they lay claim to objectives mere spitting distance from each other?
Preparation is key to victory in Kill Team’s tactical skirmish combat, and in Escalating Hostilities commanders will need to keep in mind how they’re going to approach the inevitable close-range combat as the game goes on. With safer objectives disappearing from the killzone over time, it isn’t a matter of if your kill teams will become embroiled in a door-to-door scrum for victory points, it’s when.
Commanders who can quickly get troops to the middle of the killzone will find the choicest spots open for defending the central objectives but will need to be cautious that their kill team isn’t stretched too thin. The last two Turning Points see the victory point value of objectives double as only the two in the centre remain, making tough operatives like Custodian Guard or Tyranid Warriors invaluable anchors for the coming brawl.
