One of the best things about a codex release is finding out the fun armies you can build with the new units and rules. Codex: Orks and a host of greenskin goodies are available for you to pre-order from Saturday, so we’ve had a dive into the book and come up with a few thematic armies for you to try. One of them is 99% grots, but it’ll be a great experience – trust us.
Walkin’ Is for ’Oomies
The Beast Snaggas love riding to war on the back of various squig breeds, and they commonly bulldoze their opponents with entire armies of mounted warriors. Built around a hard core of Squighog Boyz and Nobs on Smasha Squigs, this force relies on mobs of Beast Snagga Boyz in Kill Rigs and Hunta Rigs to handle the objectives while everyone else gets stuck in.
Even the boss has his own squig, with a Beastboss on Squigosaur leading the charge. The Painbosses might need to jog a bit to keep up – even though they modified their legs to help match the speed of the Beast Snaggas.
Speedwaaagh! Is da Best Waaagh!
Not to be outdone by their squig-riding rivals, Speed Freeks roar into battle lead by a Deffkilla Wartrike, who can call a powerful Speedwaaagh! when their drivers need some extra pep. This special kind of Waaagh! is especially suited to large mobs of Ork vehicles, and you can fit more buggies than ever into your army list thanks to the sweeping points reductions.
Bundle your Boyz into Trukks and Battlewagons, then throw in some Rukkatrukk Squigbuggies, Boomdakka Snazzwagons, or even Flyboyz in Wazbomb Blastajets to create a very shooty army that blazes across the battlefield.
Da Really Green Tide
Vast mobs of Ork Boyz have charged across battlefields since the dawn of Warhammer 40,000, and they’re better at it than ever before. The Boyz’s new Toughness of 5, combined with the Monster- and Vehicle-hunting prowess of the Beast Snaggas, makes an infantry-heavy army perfectly capable of overwhelming even the largest foes.
How many Orks can you fit in a 2,000-point Matched Play army? Over 200 by our count, so you may need a few pots of Orruk Flesh…
Zodgrod’s Runtwaaagh!
How do you ensure you’re the biggest and strongest Ork in the army? By surrounding yourself with grots, that’s how. While you can field an army of nothing but Gretchin, Mek Gunz, and Killa Kans with any old Warboss at the helm, it feels most appropriate to stick Zodgrod Wortsnagga in charge here. Need a big hitter for your diminutive army? The Grot Mega Tank from Forge World is just what the Dok ordered.
We’z Found a Stompa, Boss
Thanks to a hefty drop in points, the colossal Stompa can fit neatly into an Incursion-sized list alongside an entourage of Meks and Boyz. After all, there’s no such thing as too much dakka, and if anyone is going to bring a giant war machine to a low-key border skirmish, it’ll be the Orks.
Do you have any ideas for your own quirky themed armies? Perhaps a flotilla of Deffkoptas from the new Combat Patrol: Orks, supported by Stormboyz and other flying units? Let us know on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and get painting those Boyz ahead of the host of Orky pre-orders going live on Saturday.
