An ‘Eavy Metal Stalwart Joins the Citadel Colour Masterclass Team on Warhammer+ this Week

It’s an exciting week for Citadel Colour Masterclass, as the endless talents of Louise Sugden are joined by a brand new presenter.

So who’s this new host? It’s none other than Aidan Daly! Hailing from the Warhammer studio’s legendary team of ‘Eavy Metal painters, Daly has recently been judging this year’s Armies on Parade competition, and we’ve grabbed him for a few questions.

Warhammer Community: Congratulations on joining the Masterclass team! What were you doing before?

Aidan: Thank you! I'm really excited to join the team. I've spent the last nine and a half years as a part of the 'Eavy Metal team in the Warhammer Design Studio, painting plenty of miniatures but also developing the colour schemes and iconography of the Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer Age of Sigmar ranges.

WarCom: How do you think your 'Eavy Metal experience will translate into the world of Masterclass?

Aidan: I think it's a great fit for Masterclass – I can't wait to show people some of the iconic 'Eavy Metal techniques and demystify display-level painting. I love the 'Eavy Metal style and I can't wait to share it with everyone on the show!

WarCom: What paint jobs are you proudest of and why?

Aidan: I was incredibly proud to get to paint Abaddon the Despoiler, Sigvald the Magnificent, and High Marshal Helbrecht; three of my favourite characters but also three iconic paint jobs, so there was a lot of pressure to get each one perfect. 'Eavy Metal isn't just about characters though. One of my favourite projects was the first Primaris Space Marines releases – I got to paint the very first unit of Intercessors for the Dark Imperium boxed set.

WarCom: How long have you been a hobbyist? How did you first get started with Warhammer?

Aidan: 19 years! My first foray into the hobby was the Battle Games in Middle-earth magazine, although it wasn't long after that I discovered Space Marines, and I've been hooked ever since.

WarCom: Lastly, what are you most looking forward to about starting in your new role as a Masterclass presenter?

Aidan: I'm really excited to show some of my favourite techniques and make them as accessible as possible. My main goal is to make hobbyists more confident in their painting ability and more confident to try techniques they might not have thought to use before. I've always enjoyed helping people to improve their painting skills, either with 'Eavy Metal Masterclass articles in White Dwarf or at live events, so joining the Citadel Masterclass team on Warhammer+ was an opportunity I couldn't pass up!

Speaking of Citadel Colour Masterclass, Aidan's debut episode teaches you how to apply battle damage to your miniatures and give them a really well-worn look. Our latest Battle Report contenders will need it, too, as the Black Templars and Thousand Sons make their way to the table in a vicious clash of faith and sorcery.

Angels of Death reaches its epic climax as the Blood Angels count the cost of their assault on the Genestealer Cult, while the Warhammer Vault expands to include the lore from Malign Portents and yet another cracking issue of White Dwarf.
