It’s been nearly six months since the all-new game of Kill Team burst onto our tabletops, and the upcoming Starter Set is a perfect way to get stuck into sci-fi skirmishes and secret missions – if you haven’t already.
The set is packed with everything you need to get started, including in-depth rulebooks, a boat-load of scenery, and two full kill teams. Still not convinced? We’ve got 21 more reasons why it’s the perfect boxed game for you.
1. The Starter Set is Crammed to Bursting
It bears repeating that this is a monster of a Starter Set. More than 20 miniatures with over 850 transfers, plus 85 tokens, 10 dice, three combat gauges, two rulebooks, a foldable and reversible game board, and a dozen pieces of terrain… In fact, the only other thing you’ll need to get playing is some glue.
2. Death Korps of Krieg in Plastic
Take control of Veteran Guardsmen from the blighted world of Krieg, and use their diverse skill set to bring down the horrors of the 41st Millennium.
3. Sneaky Orks
Did you know some Orks like to creep up close before screaming Waaagh! and hacking their enemies to death? Kommandos certainly do. This is what passes for subtlety amongst greenskins.
4. It’s a Grot With a Grappling Hook
You read that right – the kill team’s Gretchin has dug up some well-buried courage and can be found zipping all over the killzone with his trusty grappling hook.
5. Expanded Stories
Give units from your Crusade campaign a story all of their own by taking them on Kill Team missions to enhance your narrative play experience.
6. Regular Updates
Get stuck into updates including new killzones, missions, and kill teams, such as the brand new Sister Novitiates and upgraded Pathfinders from Kill Team: Chalnath.
7. Chase Objectives in Secret
What’s better than having your own personal objectives to compete for? Keeping them secret from your opponent and revealing your victory with a dramatic flourish, that’s what.
8. Jump Out at Orks and Shout Boo
Conceal orders allow your troops to stay incognito on the battlefield, sneaking closer to the enemy before leaping out and scaring them to death (or shooting them with a lasgun, either works).
9. There’s an Awesome Trailer
Alright, it doesn’t come in the box, but we’ll never get tired of seeing the Krieg Sergeant take down a Kommando Nob in close combat.
10. Your Trusty Lasgun Has Unlimited Range
At least, in Kill Team they do. Firefights take place in such close quarters that very few weapons need to worry about range, and most can shoot from one side of the killzone to the other.
11. Cinematic Missions
There’s a wide range of missions available to choose from, including desperate struggles over precious archeotech and vicious attempts to sabotage vital defences. Orks can hack into a database just fine – that’s what a choppa is for.
12. Call in Artillery
Many kill teams are experts in stealth and camouflage, only striking when the time is right. Others, like the Astra Militarum, bring artillery along, because of course they do.
13. Oodles of Options
Nearly every member of each kill team can be assembled in multiple different ways. Does your Veteran Sergeant want to swing a chainsword or a power sword, or blast away with a boltgun? Would you rather have a medikit, or a big hecking explosive? The choice is yours.
14. Deadly Close Combat
Getting a knife in the ribs is just as lethal as it sounds, and only your own skills as a duelist will protect you when a very angry Ork charges in for the kill – which is every bit as cool to play out on the tabletop as you’d expect.
15. Every Turn is Gripping
No more waiting around for your turn – both players swap between activating one operative at a time, so you’re never more than a minute away from the action.
16. Blow Up a Whole Squad of ‘Umies With a Squig
The Kommandos’ adorable Bomb Squig is champing at the bit to show your foes some affection, and its drool-coated payload can vaporise a cluster of Veterans all at once – even an unlucky shot might make it go boom!
17. Build Your Own Base
Spec Ops narrative campaigns let you level up your operatives, award them brand new skills, and even accessorise your dream hangout.
18. In-Depth Video Tutorials
Learning to play Kill Team is a doddle with the help of three video tutorials that’ll teach you the ins and outs of the ultimate sci-fi skirmish game.
19. Perfect For a Lunchtime Scrap
It only takes about an hour to play a game of Kill Team, so you can squeeze in an epic special operations mission before the lunch whistle blows.
20. It's Easy to Add New Kill Teams
Once you get to grips with the Veteran Guardsmen and the Ork Kommandos, you can either pick up a copy of the Kill Team Compendium (with rules for 19 different factions) or leaf through recent issues of White Dwarf to find advanced rules for specialist kill teams, including Thousand Sons and Adeptus Mechanicus, with more to come. It's the perfect way to get your Warhammer 40,000 collection in on the action.
21. You Can Invent Your Own Bonkers Scenarios
Just like when Louise and Nick had the Red Gobbo try to save Christmas from the grinchy Space Wolves in Battle Report on Warhammer+.
We could be here all day listing reasons why Kill Team is utterly awesome, but the best way to find out is by diving in yourself with the Kill Team Starter Set, coming to pre-orders this Saturday. Then expand your experience with Kill Team: Chalnath, the first major expansion, and add the T’au Pathfinders and Sisters Novitiate to your collection in the process.
