What Makes the Horus Heresy So Appealing? Warhammer Community Investigates

HH LegionPicker Mar25 Header

The Horus Heresy has been part of the Warhammer 40,000 landscape since the early days, and although the story has gone through more than a few changes over the years,* it remains a cornerstone of the galaxy’s history. So much so, in fact, that over 100 books, novellas, and short stories have been written about its events.

With the new edition of Warhammer: The Horus Heresy inching ever closer, we sat down with some of the most prolific writers and creators involved in this epic saga to find out what they think makes it so dear to so many Warhammer fans.

It’s clear that a big part of the enduring love for the Horus Heresy comes from the Legions themselves, as the sheer variety of character between them ensures that there’s a home for hobbyists of all stripes.** The new edition reinforces this trait with characterful rules for all 18 Legions, allowing players to field a force that best represents the factions they know and love.

Although the conflict involves millions of soldiers, titanic war machines, and the clash of fleets on an unimaginable scale, the drama of the Heresy is also writ across a much smaller scale – relationships between individual characters. These play out on the tabletop just as much as in the books, as iconic characters like Abaddon and Garviel Loken reenact their fateful encounters.
