Held at the end of March, AdeptiCon was an amazing event, with some incredible reveals and the triumphant return of Golden Demon. There was also plenty of mind-blowing Warhammer hobby activity on display – it’s impossible to pick a favourite, but we simply had to share this display board from the Warhammer Age of Sigmar team event.
Skulls on the battlements? Now that’s what we call an ivory tower! We sat down with Adam Trunzo to find out how his team came up with this glorious creation.
Adam: With this being the first ever Warhammer Age of Sigmar Team Tournament, we wanted to bring together a hobby-focused team that could celebrate the over-the-top nature of a team tournament.
In January, we assembled our team – Brendan Melnick, Andrew Simons, Mike Butcher, and myself – then spent a few days settling on an immersive theme, including shared motifs for our paint schemes, banners, and basing.
We all liked different types of vampires, and in looking for settings for our display, we settled on the Crimson Keep – the translocating home of Prince Vhordrai and his Kastelai Dynasty, described in Battletome: Soulblight Gravelords.
I’d been seeing large-scale displays for Warhammer 40,000 at AdeptiCon for years, and thought, “why do they get to have all the fun?” A team tournament was the perfect excuse to build a larger-than-life display.
I tried a few different layouts, and then started building. I knew I wanted special features for each of our armies, including a cave for the wolves, mausoleums for the zombies, and a path leading down from the castle for the Blood Knights to come charging out of.
The whole display is made out of extruded polystyrene sheets, plaster, and hot glue, and it took me a little over two months to build. It was constructed in two-foot chunks that could be taken apart and reassembled on site – I had to ask the tournament organiser how tall the ceiling was for the room!
It was so tall that I couldn’t put it together inside my house, so the first time I saw it in one piece was at AdeptiCon. When I initially measured its height, it came out to 7’11”. I knew this would bother me, so I added a Ravening Direflock to the top to ensure it cleared eight feet!
At AdeptiCon, we were the first ever Warhammer Age of Sigmar display to be selected for the Parade of Armies on Saturday night, and it felt great to show off my hard work to so many people.
It’s always been my goal to gain wider recognition for all the fantastic Warhammer Age of Sigmar hobbyists out there, and I look forward to what other teams bring next year. Our team is already thinking up ideas – I plan on making this year’s display look like a warm-up round!
