There’s a triple-decker of fantastic content coming to Warhammer+ today, with new episodes of Battle Report and Interrogator, while this week’s episode of Citadel Colour Masterclass is a biggie. With the revolutionary range of new Contrast paints on the way, Aidan has a bag of tricks to help you get the most out of the vibrant colours on offer. We caught up with him to find out what makes Contrast such a great tool for high-level painters.
Warhammer Community: The new colours are pretty intense! What does that do for more experienced painters?
Aidan Daly: Being able to easily add highly saturated colour is a fantastic tool for all skill levels. Whether you’re using Contrast paints straight from the pot over a light basecoat or glazing them over other colours, having much more saturated colours lets you add a much wider range of tones to your miniatures. The high volume of pigment means they’re also incredibly versatile regardless of how much you dilute them with Contrast Medium.
WC: What are some of the cool things you can do thanks to the unique properties of Contrast paint?
Aidan: Contrast paints being designed to cover whole areas of a miniature make them the perfect paints for glazing, and thinning them down using Contrast Medium means they keep that intense colour and the smooth flow that’s perfect for creating a film of colour on the model.
WC: Is there anything you think they’re especially good at when glazing a model?
Aidan: They’re great when you want to change or adjust the hue of an area you’re painting – if the highlights on your red cloak are a little too orange, a glaze of Baal Red will help to shift the whole cloak back to a rich red colour while keeping the contrast from those carefully painted highlights. The high pigmentation means even one glaze will give you an instant result, while the transparency means none of your detail is lost
WC: Are there any other ways you’d use Citadel Contrast that people might not expect?
Aidan: The black and brown colours in the Contrast range are perfect for adding depth and interest to any metal parts of a model, as the satin finish really helps to keep that realistic look when used over metallic paints. Black Legion thinned with a small amount of Contrast Medium looks incredible when carefully applied to the recesses of any functional metal parts, like bolt rifles or chainmail, while a deep shade of Gor-Grunta Fur is great way to add richness to your gold armour.
WC: Is there a particular faction or model you’re excited to paint with the new Contrast range?
Aidan: I can’t wait to get stuck in with some Imperial Fists and Ironjawz using the new yellow contrast paints, they have such a strong opaque finish over White Scar Spray, even with one coat. Painting yellow has never been easier!
WC: Do you have a project of your own that you would like to get cracking on, taking advantage of these new colours? #WarhamnmerPaintathon
Aidan: I’ve got some Seraphon models ready to paint and I’m definitely going to be using a lot of the new Contrast paints on them. They’re a range of miniatures that really benefits from the intense saturated colours.
Thanks Aidan! Tune in to Citadel Colour Masterclass on Warhammer+ today to find out how to use the new Contrast range to elevate your models.
The clash between the Sons of Horus and the Imperial Fists continues this week in the second Warhammer: The Horus Heresy episode of Battle Report. Displeased with his warriors’ performance thus far, Warmaster Horus himself takes to the field for an epic showdown with the Praetorian of Terra, Rogal Dorn.
This episode is nothing short of unmissable, showcasing a 3,000-point clash between armies tricked out with units never seen before on Battle Report, and a mighty duel between Primarchs.
Meanwhile, Jurgen’s investigation continues in the next episode of Interrogator. Things have been going from bad to worse for our former Inquisitorial agent, and just when you think things are looking up… well, you’ll have to watch the episode to find out.
