In the Realm of Beasts, new battle lines are drawn up in the vast tunnels networks of Gallet with the launch of The General’s Handbook: Pitch Battles 2022-23 Season 1. As with most things in Warhammer Age of Sigmar, we’ve accepted this bizarre new reality without question – because this is a world where continents can float.
But what is tunnel fighting in the Mortal Realms actually like? What are the advantages, and where are the pitfalls? It’s time for the Warhammer Community team to grab a gryph-canary and lantern, and get exploring.
There Are Just So Many Rats
The perfidious Skaven are well known for their tendency to bore out from the void between the Realms and spill into realspace.* Wherever you go in Gallet, you’re sure to be no more than a few steps from a skulking Stormvermin or 10.
Veterans of internecine tunnel wars, they put their prowess into practice in the Expert Conquerors and Bounty Hunter Battalions, which let them count as more models than they are when securing objectives or deal additional damage to enemy Galletian Veterans.
Did The Wall Just Move Or Was That Bugs?
Always be careful where you tread here, as you may step on a vicious little insect, or even worse – into the mouth of a giant one. Arthropods, arachnids, beetles, and beyond – these caverns are full of critters, and they’re not just tasty treats for your cave-dwelling Troglodons.
Battleplans like The Nidus Paths and Silksteel Nest ground even the most competitive games of Warhammer Age of Sigmar in a rich narrative. You can add to the chitinous hordes with swarms of fly-riding Pusgoyle Blightlords led by a Lord of Afflictions or an aerial squadron of Spiterider Lancers doing the bidding of the beetle-riding Everqueen herself.**
Troggoths Become Invigorated by the Dank Atmosphere
The Gloomspite Gitz often go to great lengths to rouse lazy Troggoths from their caves and drag them into battle, but now that the fight has come to their homes they need slightly less persuading.
The cool, stagnant air beneath Gallet is like divine incense to a Rockgut Troggoth. Joining the hordes of Gitz and Squigs, they’re even tastier in a scrap as the latest Battlescroll boosts their save rolls with Moonlight Hides when touched by the Light of the Bad Moon.***
There Are All Sorts of Secrets Down Here, in the Dark
There is a subterranean Mawtribe with a love of heavy explosives called the Underguts. They live in Ulgu – just a realmgate hop away. When excavating new paths, be careful you don’t uncover a buried warband of Deathrattle Skeletons either – the Ossiarch Bonereapers have laid claim to all spare marrow in the area.
There’s a whole game system devoted to battling in the deepest, darkest, and most treacherous pits in all the realms, Warhammer Underworlds! You can easily add any spelunking Warbands to help expand your Warhammer Age of Sigmar army.
If you want to get in on these underground battles, make sure you’ve picked up the General’s Handbook so you can do your part and lay claim to the riches beneath Gallet. Sign up for our newsletter for more news and information.
* Sometimes into Azyr, sometimes into the Khaphtar Sea, it’s always a surprise.
** Pusgoyle Blightlords and Spiterider Lancers make deadly, resilient Bounty Hunter picks too.
*** Not even being underground can stop the lunar rays of the Bad Moon from affecting your Gitz.
