The Cities of Sigmar represent the common folk in Warhammer Age of Sigmar, a vital faction who put the “mortal” into the Mortal Realms. The humans, aelves, and duardin of the Free Cities make up the bulk of Sigmar’s faithful – and the majority of his armies. The Warhammer Studio is currently hard at work redesigning the Cities of Sigmar, and we’re here to bring you another behind-the-scenes look at how they’re developing.
Earlier this year, we offered up the first glimpse of this long-awaited update, with some accessories and accoutrements emblazoned with the God-King’s name and initial.* These ornamentations are a powerful symbol of the devotion Sigmar commands throughout his Dawnbringer Crusades.
Having a holy name on your gear isn’t enough when you’re venturing out into untamed realms corrupted by Chaos or reclaimed by primeval forces, though. What these regular folks need to battle the dangers of the world are weapons, forged in the armouries of the Free Cities to bash, slash, and smash their way to victory.
The Dawnbringer Crusades are Sigmar’s grand push back into the lost regions of the Mortal Realms, founding new settlements that they hope will someday grow into Free Cities of their own. Each expedition is spearheaded by a contingent of soldiers armed with hardened steel, behind which trails a caravan of colonists, supplies, beasts of burden, and pre-fabricated buildings. If all goes well these soldiers will be able to join in and settle down peacefully, too – if all goes well.
Unfortunately, these shattered realms are beset with horrors, raiders, and unfriendly fauna – or flora – but an honest cutting edge or doughty spiked maul is just as good as the lightning-wrought divine weapons of the Stormcast Eternals. Probably. In a pinch.
Although rare and unreliable, gunpowder weaponry is also available for those who’d rather keep their distance, from intricate flintlock pistols that can shoot through the breastplate of a Hobgrot Slitta at 40 paces, to an ingeniously brutal combination of pike and man-portable cannon.
This brief look at the Cities of Sigmar armoury is all we have… for now. The full release is a fair way off, and they won’t be embarking this year – but Hyshian aelves, eldritch Change cults, lumbering gargants, and gluttonous ogors are all on the way in the meantime. We’ll keep bringing you updates as the Warhammer Studio’s own Dawnbringer Crusade continues its preparations.
