Soulblight vampires spend every night of their immortal lives with a persistent hunger for blood gnawing away at them. Some, like the Askurgan Trueblades, do their best to restrain this rapacious hunger, going so far as to entomb themselves with terrified mortals to prove they can go a whole night without so much as a nibble.*
These ascetic fellows are a touch unusual compared to the many other types of vampire in the Mortal Realms, who run the gamut from nightmare stalkers to debauched aristocrats who rule whole kingdoms. With this new gang of pointy-toothed pariahs on the way, we’re taking the opportunity to compare them to other famous vamps.
The Hollow King
Much like the Trueblades, Cado Ezechiar has a strict code – he refuses to touch a drop of the red stuff unless it’s syphoned straight from the neck of someone who really deserves it – any innocent souls are off the menu! The star of The Hollow King only drinks to further his quest for vengeance for his family and kingdom.
The Mother of Nightmares
Then there’s the queen of the Avengorii Dynasty, Lauka Vai, Mother of Nightmares and protagonist of A Dynasty of Monsters. This monstrous matriarch was once an Askurga Renkai, a member of the ancient order whose teachings the Trueblades follow.** Now she exercises those old mantras of restraint to keep the feral rage within her quelled – most of the time, at least.
Rulers of the Dead
Certain vampires of the Mortal Realms find their origins in the World-that-Was. All sorts of heroes, villains, monsters, and gods survived the End Times through various means, and there are few as tenacious as a supernatural bloodsucker.
Neferata was returned to life by Nagash and now reluctantly enforces his will. She indulges in a certain amount of scheming due to her position of power as Mortarch of Blood. If nothing else, immortality truly hones your pettiness.
Genevieve and Ulrika
Could Nagash or even some foolish mortal manage to pluck another vampire soul from the swirling energy between the realms? How would we cope if legendary vampires such Genevieve or Ulrika were to return? Would they save any mercy for the Askurgan Trueblades, or the rest of the Soulblight dynasties?***
For now you can gorge yourself on Bloodhunt, the thrilling new boxed expansion for Warcry which you can pre-order on Saturday. It contains eight Askurgan Trueblades bending their strict code to throw hands with a howling pack of Khornate cultists.
* The Trueblades then feed any prisoners who survive to their Fell Bats. Tough luck.
** She murdered the original Renkai when they turned on her after metamorphosis.
*** They’d probably get on with Cado.
