The Exemplary Battles in the Age of Darkness series has now touched on all 18 of the Legiones Astartes, bringing new units, conflicts, and scenarios to the fore. But with new tanks rolling off the production lines in huge numbers, the war for the soul of humanity is far from over.
In the first edition of a second wave of releases, the Horus Heresy team are now exploring some of the more unusual corners of an already strange war. We begin with the Bound Daemons of the Ruinstorm, a force that can be taken as allies and summoned right into the thick of things by Traitor forces (especially by their Esoterists). It’s joined by a new narrative scenario, The Burning of Ohmn-Mat, in a free download available right here. Andy from the Warhammer Design Studio is here to explain more.
Andy: Our deep dive into some of the lesser-known units of the Legiones Astartes has come to an end, but the Exemplary Battles series isn’t over. Over the coming months, we'll be exploring some of the more obscure – some might say esoteric – factions of the setting, both mortal and unliving.
Our first stop is the Bound Daemons of the Ruinstorm, otherworldly monstrosities summoned from the warp to serve mortal summoners. Bound Daemons work as an Allied Detachment deployed alongside a Primary Detachment, and allow you to take the likes of Samus and Ruinstorm Daemon Brutes in your Traitor army.
This is presented in the familiar Exemplary Battles format, featuring an extensive narrative (in this case the battle for the Forge World of Ohmn-Mat), complete with specially-written scenarios and unit entries.
But this is just the beginning. The Horus Heresy team has been extremely busy writing, playtesting, illustrating, and laying out the next wave of supplements. Alongside these projects, they've been working away on a few other army lists, which are very nearly ready to release as PDFs. The first of these is the much-anticipated Imperialis Militia army list. This army is a kit-basher's dream, and we saved it until the release of the new Cadian Shock Troopers, the Veteran Guardsmen, and the Blooded to make it more achievable.
After that, we'll be returning to all things Daemonic with a full army list for the Daemons of the Ruinstorm, representing a full warp breach of Neverborn spilling out of the churning Sea of Souls. There's more work to do yet – it's a tricky faction to balance, but we hope to have it ready at some point over the summer.
To cap all this infernal content off, we'll be looking at various types of Cultists, as well as Daemon Engines, so Traitor players in particular will be spoiled for choice when it comes to allies and standalone armies. If I were a Loyalist I'd be preparing to sell my life dearly this summer…
Thanks Andy. All the Esoterists, Daemoniacs, and other rum coves out there can download their The Burning of Ohmn-Mat PDF from this very website by clicking the button above. It contains rules for using such luminaries as Samus and Ka’Bandha, alongside Daemonic Regents, Attendants, and Brutes. As for the rest, we’ll have more for you – including a roadmap for the rest of the year – in the not-so-grim darkness of the very near future.
