Heresy Thursday – Artillery of the Solar Auxilia

By the time of the Horus Heresy, large-bore guns that lob explosive munitions from far away have been in use for roughly 30 millennia, and while the technology may have been finessed across 30,000 years, the principle is exactly the same: keep as much distance between you and the other guys as possible.

In the 31st Millennium, if you’re not a genetically enhanced super-soldier, you have to rely on prosaic considerations such as ‘weight of fire’ and ‘strength in numbers’. The Solar Auxilia understand this – which is why they have so many armoured vehicles. For instance, the Basilisk and the Medusa.

Sharing a chassis, these two workhorse medium tanks demolish things at long and close range, respectively. The Basilisk mounts an earthshaker cannon that puts out denture-rattling Strength 9 hits at extreme range as an Ordnance weapon with the Barrage special rule.

The Medusa, on the other hand, prefers to get up close with the Strength 9 medusa mortar, another Ordnance weapon, this one with the Rending special rule. Neither alternative is especially pleasant for anyone who finds themself on the operative end of either barrel.

This is a dual kit which makes one self-propelled gun in the pattern of your preference, but there are loads of options to customise it to your exacting standards. For instance, the hatch may be built open or closed, and there are two head options for a tank commander, who may either be built examining a monitor or operating a pintle weapon.

The pintle can be a heavy flamer, a multi-laser, or a heavy stubber, while you can also fit a hunter-killer missile and a dozer blade.

Excitingly, there are also loads of interior detail options, including ammo magazines and extra crew.

This dual kit will be available soon for your games of Warhammer: The Horus Heresy, ready to slot into a larger force of plastic Solar Auxilia. Once we can share the release date, we’ll do it right here.
