Black Library Reader’s Choice 2024 – Which Warhammer Stories Will Rise Again This Year?

The Black Library archives are packed with hundreds of novels, and it is once again time to petition the enrobed curators of its hallowed halls to reprint two of its most treasured tomes.

Dozens of new books come out every year, giving readers a window into the many worlds of Warhammer, but once in a while, it’s the public at large who get to award two of their favourite books with a Reader’s Choice reprint. That’s a lot of responsibility, so use it wisely.

This year, there are two sets of five books to choose from across Warhammer 40,000 and the World of Legend.

Battered and broken, The Titans of Legio Invicta are in dire need of refit and repair but instead must battle a legion of Chaos Titans on the crucial forge world of Orestes in Dan Abnett’s Titanicus.

Soul Drinker is the first novel in a series by Ben Counter. It charts the beginning of the Chapter's slow descent into Chaos as their blind obsession throws them into conflict with those they are honour-bound to obey.

In Ice Guard by Steve Lyons, Colonel Stanislav Steele leads a squad of Valhallan Ice Warriors on a rescue mission, which soon becomes a race against time as Chaos forces move in and the Imperium prepares to end the conflict with its deadly virus bombs.

Librarian Karras leads the elain-hunting Talon Squad in a decisive mission against a Genestealer infestation that threatens to consume an entire planet in Deathwatch by Steve Parker.

The Silver Skulls are an Ultramarines successor Chapter who are far from orthodox in their methods, their flaws come to the fore as shadowy forces manipulate them in a conflict with renegades in S P Cawkwell’s Silver Skulls: Portents.

The End Times bear down on the heart of the Empire in The Fall of Altdorf by Chris Wraight, as Reiksmarshal Kurt Helborg must grapple with the unthinkable loss of his Emperor and prepare his city for a final confrontation against the plague-ridden hordes of Nurgle.

In Grey Seer by CL Werner, everyone’s favourite Skaven sorcerer Thanquol – archenemy of the legendary duo Gotrek and Felix – returns with a plot to poison the city of Altdorf. To see his plan succeed, he must find a dread artefact known only as the Wormstone, and he’s not the only one on its trail…Bloodborn by Nathan Long follows the struggle of a newly turned vampire to adapt to a life of undeath, made more complicated when a fellow creature of the night is killed in the Empire city of Nuln. Ulrika and her mentor Gabriella are sent to investigate, but what they find may just spiral from a simple case of murder into a plot that threatens their entire bloodline.

Few champions of Chaos have as long and blood-soaked a legacy as Valkia the Bloody, favoured consort of Khorne and one of the fiercest warriors to ever butcher her way across Norsca. Follow her entire story from the early days as a marauding shield-bearer to her ultimate destiny as the Gorequeen in this classic novel from S P Cawkwell.

Warlord Queek Headtaker is an all-but unheard of creature – a Skaven possessed of courage, savage intellect, and complete fearlessness in battle. When a Dwarfen lord musters an army for battle at Karak Azul, Queek assembles his stormvermin for a surprise attack in Headtaker by David Guymer – though even a commander as disciplined as he cannot resist the chance to meet such a renowned hero in single combat.
