The launch box for the new edition of Warhammer Age of Sigmar is absolutely crammed with stuff, including dozens of new Stormcast Eternals and Skaven, as well as a full set of kit for Spearhead battles, the slick and strategic new game mode you can play in around an hour.
On top of all that, there’s a new Core Book which contains everything else you need to play competitive and narrative games – as well as an extra Spearhead book and a deck of matched play cards. Let’s take a closer look!
Warhammer Age of Sigmar Core Book
At 272 pages, this tome is absolutely crammed with plenty of rich background information, gorgeous miniature photography, and full rules, including Core Rules, Advanced Rules, and the First Blood and Path to Glory Battlepacks.
It first introduces the war-torn Mortal Realms, setting the stage for the Hour of Ruin, a fresh conflict ushered in by the cataclysmic Vermindoom. Then we find out more on the nature of the Mortal Realms, with a gorgeous gatefold section that captures the Cosmos Aracne like never before.
The vast and fantastic cosmology of the Mortal Realms is part of the central appeal of Warhammer Age of Sigmar, and we see it here from fresh perspectives. Instead of presenting the setting from an omniscient viewpoint, the section on each realm lets native characters do the talking, introducing civilisations, flora, and fauna alongside snippets of the current narrative and interesting facts. There’s even a cool fold-out map included as part of the book.
With the basics covered, it’s time for a history lesson running from the Age of Myth to the current era – tackling the Realmgate Wars, the Soul Wars, the Era of the Beast, and the intertwined tragedy and triumph that caps off the current Dawnbringers narrative.
Next there’s an introduction to every faction in the game, followed by pages of incredible photography of miniatures on kaleidoscopic battlefields.
It wouldn’t be a Core Book without rules, so you’ll find the Core Rules along with all the Advanced Rules modules, followed by the First Blood Matched Play Battlepack and the Path to Glory: Ascension Battlepack so you can start playing right away in whichever way you prefer.
Shortly after the release of Skaventide, you’ll have the chance to pick up a copy of the Core Book – with slightly different art – as well as a gorgeous Collector’s Edition. More news on those later.
General’s Handbook Cards
For people wanting to get stuck right into the competitive end of Matched Play, Skaventide contains a deck of 17 General’s Handbook Cards. These include the rules for the 2024-25 Season, two battle tactics cards covering all six universal battle tactics and the eight Grand Alliance battle tactics, plus all 12 double-sided battleplan cards which cover battleplan rules, deployment, and suggested terrain layouts.
These battleplans comb the previous three editions to pick out some fan-favourite set-ups, updating them for the new edition.
A full General’s Handbook will also follow, containing all the Core and Advanced Rules, alongside endless spell updates, scoring sheets, and so on.
Spearhead: Fire and Jade
On top of all of this, there is also a 144-page hardback Spearhead: Fire and Jade book, which contains all the rules you need to play, including Core Rules, Spearhead rules, the Fire and Jade battleplan, and full printed rules for every single Spearhead army currently available – as well as the Sons of Behemat, and two new Spearheads made from models in the Skaventide boxed set.
Rules for your Spearhead forces will be available in the upcoming Faction Packs, and put online for free download shortly after the launch of the new edition.
