The new edition of Warhammer Age of Sigmar has arrived, and everything you need to play a game – apart from a collection of lovingly painted miniatures – is available to download for free right now.
For those looking to take their first steps into the game as a new player, or others who need somewhere to start as a returning general, there are three new Warhammer Age of Sigmar starter sets coming soon, each designed to get you started at a level you’re comfortable with. All three are great for introducing new players to the game, so if you’re a hobbyist trying to get your friends to join in, this is where you should start.
Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Introductory Set
Perhaps you’ve never heard of Sigmar, or you’ve never built or painted a miniature, let alone played a tabletop wargame. But if you’re captivated by the fantasy of Order and Chaos fighting for the fate of all existence, this set is for you.
The Introductory Set contains five hammer-wielding Stormcast Eternals Liberators and a horde of 20 Skaven Clanrats – all push-fit miniatures on push-off frames, so you can get started without clippers or glue. It also includes a Citadel Starter Brush and six paints to get you started: Kantor Blue, Retributor Armour, Leadbelcher, Rakarth Flesh, Khorne Red, and Steel Legion Drab. It’s the perfect intro for new Warhammer hobbyists.
It will also get you up to speed with Warhammer Age of Sigmar with a 48-page softback handbook which contains background details on the Mortal Realms, the Stormcast Eternals and Skaven, as well as hobby guides, and scenarios that take you through the basics of playing. It comes with a set of six dice, a range ruler, and a playing mat to ensure you have everything you need to get started.
Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Starter Set
The Starter Set is a middle ground. You know what a tabletop game is, and you already have your own hobby supplies, but perhaps you haven’t played Warhammer Age of Sigmar before – so this is the perfect way to get a taste.
This box contains 35 push-fit miniatures, split between the God-King’s blessed warriors and the Skaven menace. A Lord-Veritant with a Gryph-crow, three Prosecutors, and five Stormcast Eternals Liberators face off against a Grey Seer, a Warlock Engineer, three Rat Ogors, and 20 Clanrats. You’ll need clippers to cut these miniatures out from the frame, unlike the Introductory Set, and no paints or brush are included.
Instead, the box contains a 64-page softback handbook, which provides background information on Warhammer Age of Sigmar, and a series of tutorials that cover all the basics. A set of 10 dice, a double-sided gaming mat, two range rulers and two rules reference sheets complete the package.
Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Ultimate Starter Set
The Ultimate Starter set contains all the key components for jumping into the thrilling new Spearhead game mode for Warhammer Age of Sigmar. This is a fast, fun, and richly tactical experience that captures the magic of the full game in bouts that you can wrap up over lunch. This box contains two full forces, a double-sided gaming mat with printed objectives, 10 dice, a frame of plastic terrain including 3” and 6” plastic range rulers, two decks of Battle Tactic cards, and two Twist decks themed to each board side – so it’s also a brilliant way to make a start on two mighty new armies.
Each Spearhead is a self-contained force. The Vigilant Brotherhood takes everything from the Starter Set and adds a Lord-Vigilant on Gryph-stalker to lead the troops, while the Gnawfeast Clawpack expands on the contents of the Starter Set with a Clawlord on Gnaw-beast.
The box also includes a 144-page Spearhead: Fire and Jade book which contains the Core Rules for the main game, a Spearhead Battlepack which lays out the rules specific to this game mode, and rules for every single Spearhead force in existence from every faction in the game – allowing players to branch out and add any force to their collection.
The 72-page handbook that accompanies the Ultimate Starter Set includes background information, hobby guides, and tutorials that cover the basics of gameplay. There’s a set of 10 dice, two range rulers, and two rules reference sheets.
Warhammer Age of Sigmar Paint Sets
There are also three Warhammer Age of Sigmar Paint Sets on the horizon.
The Stormcast Eternals Paint Set and Skaven Paint Set both include models to practise on, plus a brush and six carefully selected paints. The Warhammer Age of Sigmar Paints and Tools Set, meanwhile, includes 13 paints, a brush, clippers, and a mouldline scraper.
All of these sets will be available to pre-order shortly.
