Warhammer Underworlds Is More Accessible Than Ever Thanks to the Rivals Format

WHUW Gnarlwood Header

As the new season of Warhammer Underworlds heads beneath the Gnarlwood, there’s never been a better time to get into the game. Here’s why the Rivals format is perfect for new players, lapsed Warhammer Underworlds enthusiasts, and even the most hardcore fans.

The Rivals format was launched with Warhammer Underworlds: Harrowdeep but the new boxed set has been created to make this format even more accessible. All you need is your warband and either your warband’s Rivals deck, or a universal pre-built Rivals deck. This format has been great for new players while also offering those with more experience new ways to play with their older warbands – now you have to outplay your opponent on the tabletop, rather than beat them at deck building.

The new Warhammer Underworlds: Gnarlwood boxed set contains two incredible warbands which both have their own Rivals deck, so you can assemble your miniatures, shuffle your decks, and then you’re ready to play!

It also includes two themed universal Rivals decks, one of which is about bringing out the savage nature of your fighters, and the other focuses on exploring the caverns beneath the Gnarlwood.

These new Rivals decks can be used with the Sons of Velmorn, the Gnarlspirit Pack, or any previously released warband – from the first season’s Steelheart’s Champions to the most recently released Gorechosen of Dromm

Nemesis Format

There’s also a new format in the new season, for those who wish to dip their toes into deckbuilding. Nemesis sees you create a deck from your warband-specific cards and the cards in a universal Rivals deck. This hits the sweet spot between Rivals and the open, deck-building Relic* format, giving new players a first taste of experimenting with adding and removing cards while still using a manageable card pool. For experienced players, this isn’t about trying to make the perfectly optimised deck – it’s about working with the strengths and weaknesses of your warband’s deck to develop creative solutions.
