Dave Perryman interview: The Slayer Sword winner discusses his immaculate entry

This weekend at SPIEL in Essen, talented painters from around the globe convened to enter Golden Demon, one of the most prestigious painting competitions in the world.

There were hundreds of incredible entries across numerous categories this year, but no matter how many enter, only one person can lift the coveted Slayer Sword.

This year the ultimate winner was Dave Perryman with a flawless Trugg the Troggoth King. We caught up with Dave right after his win.

Two and a half months of painting up to 10 hours a day, giving equal attention to every part of the miniature – even those normally obscured – and taking the chance with a challenging resin pour are just some of the things Dave had to contend with while crafting his masterpiece

Our photographers show just how much texture and detail Dave has packed into this miniature while preserving sculpted details. It was painted with very few sub-assemblies, requiring careful handling with gloves during the lengthy painting process.

Inspired by the background of Trugg waking up from his long slumber deep within a cave, Dave created the base with its flock of Bat Squigs and running waterfall in order to fully realise such a dank and gloomy environment.*

Congratulations to Dave for winning the Slayer Sword – a momentous and well-deserved achievement! In the coming weeks we’ll be showing off the many Commended entries from this year's Golden Demon – those entries that were in contention for trophy placings.
