The new Battlezone: Fronteris – Nachmund terrain set is a modular medley of rugged Imperial terrain. We’ve already heard how the studio designed it to complement matched play, produce varied layouts, and create fun tabletop narratives – but one enterprising hobbyist has taken it to a whole new level.
Pete ‘the Wargamer’ Harrison took one look at Battlezone: Fronteris before deciding what it needed was some tank treads and a big gun.* We found out how he went about building his own custom colossus.
Pete: I’ve always loved superheavy tanks, so being able to create my own was always an ambition. After getting my hands on the Battlezone: Fronteris terrain, I knew it would create an excellent basis for my own armoured behemoth.
I began by mixing the tracked sections of a Baneblade with the top and side panels from the Fronteris Landing Pad. This gave me an even larger chassis than the regular Baneblade, with plenty of room to add weapons and details.
To equip the Stormsabre – as I christened this original variant – with some offensive capability, I first modified the superstructure of the Shadowsword to fit the top of my landing pad hull. I definitely wanted a single giant cannon, and while the volcano cannon is already pretty big, I decided to up the size even further.
To create a gun worthy of my bulked-up Baneblade, I mixed in some chimney parts from the Sector Mechanicus Alchomite Stack – which fits in perfectly with the Battlezone: Fronteris set. This almost doubled the length of the barrel, further increasing the size of the already-immense cannon.
And so, the Stormsabre was born! I like to think of this vehicle as the 41st Millennium’s equivalent to ancient Terran battering rams. Its main gun wouldn't be out of place among the Imperium’s space fleets and should make short work of any fortifications unlucky enough to find themselves in front of its hulking frame.
It must have banks of humming generators and capacitors within its hull to feed its power-hungry weapon, ready to lay waste to anything in its sights…
