The first Horus Heresy novel was released just under 20 years ago. Dan Abnett’s Horus Rising was the opening tale in a series that now numbers nearly 70 mainline books, and every single cover – bar one – has been painted by a single artist.
The inimitable style of Neil Roberts mixes grim realism with shocking flashes of the fantastic, and has defined the look of the Horus Heresy for readers around the world. So now Black Library is releasing a 320-page A4 hardback book that collects every single piece of cover art.
The Art of The Horus Heresy is a must-have for any fan of Horus Heresy, containing a curated selection of over 200 full-cover illustrations from both the Horus Heresy and Siege of Terra series. That’s everything from Horus Rising all the way through to The End and The Death: Volume III, all represented as glorious, high-quality, full-colour images.
Some highlights include Vulkan Lives, The Unremembered Empire, Eye of Terra, and The Siege of Terra: Mortis, all rendered vividly across double-page spreads, alongside the illustrations for lesser-known novellas and audio dramas like Promethean Sun and Honour to the Dead.
Of all the existing mainline Horus Heresy novels, only the cover of False Gods wasn’t painted by Neil – this collection features both the original art by Phillip Sibbering, and also Neil Robert’s new reimagination, which gives the Sons of Horus their era-appropriate deep sea green armour.
Alongside these stunning artworks are a selection of case studies, which give an insight into the creative process behind the compositions on various covers. Neil also chips in with thoughts and reflections on his work on a range of covers throughout the book.
Together, these additions make this an unparalleled look at the creative process of designing the cover art for this groundbreaking and best-selling Warhammer series.
This A4-sized hardback book is limited to 6,500 copies and will be available to pre-order from Saturday. It’s the perfect addition to any Black Library collection, and a stylish adornment for any coffee table.
