Golden Demon at Warhammer Fest 2023 – The Commended Entries (Part One)

This year’s UK edition of Golden Demon was a closely contested competition of consummate skill. Many of the best painters in the world duking it out in Manchester for a chance to lift the Slayer Sword in front of a cheering crowd.

The judges worked long and hard to determine who was the best of the best, selecting a clutch of entries to win Gold, Silver and Bronze in their respective categories. That was before the most difficult task of all – awarding the coveted Slayer Sword.

There are two further levels below the podium. Finalist Pins are awarded to everyone who makes the first cut, while Commendations go to any entry in contention for the top three. In general, very little separates these commendations from placing in this extremely prestigious event.

To celebrate everyone’s hard work, we will reveal every Commended entry on Warhammer Community – there’s a lot to get through and it’ll take some time, so here’s the first batch. Congratulations to all!

Warhammer 40,000 Single Miniature

Always one of the most closely fought categories, there were 10 exceptional entries.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar Single Miniature

Seven years after it was first released, Warhammer Age of Sigmar is no longer the new kid on the block. This category included the overall Slayer Sword winner – talk about tough competition.

Small Scale

The Small Scale category is for miniatures from games like Adeptus Titanicus and Aeronautica Imperialis and is a chance for painters to tackle great engines of death and dynamic flyers which may not be feasible in other categories.

Youngbloods

Every winner starts somewhere – the winner of the Slayer Sword, Albert Moreto Font started painting 21 years ago, getting his first taste of competition by entering as a Youngblood. These painters are the next generation of Golden Demon winners, and this crop is enviably talented!*

The Open Competition

From ambitious concept pieces to larger-scale miniatures, through character busts and all sorts of other oddities, the Open Competition is also the only category that Games Workshop staff can enter – which guarantees some fierce painting.

That’s it for the first batch of Commended entries. Next week we’ll be showcasing the cream of a few more categories. Congratulations again to everyone who was featured!

* Congratulations as well to Django Bennett-Clarke, who also earned a Youngbloods Commendation – unfortunately, our photos of their striking Hearthkyn Warriors diorama seem to have been devoured by Glitchlings. Rest assured the tech-serfs responsible are undergoing harsh penance.
