Maelstrom of War returns and Flashpoint enters the Mortal Realms in White Dwarf 461

Can you believe we’re one month into 2021 already? That means we’re a step closer to reading February’s White Dwarf – in fact, you’ll be able to pre-order this month’s issue of everyone’s favourite Warhammer magazine on Friday the 12th of February. As a teaser of what you can look forward to reading, here’s a sneak peek at the cover, contents, and a few choice morsels within.

The cover of February’s issue is graced by none other than the Hedonites of Slaanesh, so before you gaze upon it, make sure you steel your soul, lest you lose it to the Dark Prince of Chaos.

Let’s take a look inside the cover and check out the magazine's juicy contents.

It’s fair to say that there’s plenty to look forward to, but we’ll treat you to a glimpse of a few of our favourites.

Into the maelstrom

Anyone who played Warhammer 40,000 during its recent editions will remember that matched play missions were divided into two formats.

Eternal War missions represented battles fought over specific objectives, with clearly defined victory conditions. Meanwhile, Maelstrom of War challenged players to think on their feet and react to events as they unfolded. One moment you would need to claim or hold an objective, another you might need to eliminate an enemy Psyker, Vehicle, Monster, or perhaps even the enemy Warlord.

Well, courtesy of this month’s White Dwarf, you’ll soon be able to fight Maelstrom of War battles once again, as the rules have been revamped into an updated mission pack for the current edition of Warhammer 40,000. If you like your games to be unpredictable and to test your skills as a general, make sure you pick up a copy.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar is up next, with a series that will be familiar to many but is brand new to the setting.

Fantasy Flashpoint

If you enjoyed the awesome Warhammer 40,000 Flashpoint series set in the Argovon System, you’ll be pleased to know that the Mortal Realms are about to play host to one of their very own.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar’s inaugural Flashpoint series takes you right into the heart of one the key events unfolding within the setting of the Broken Realms. An instalment of the Tome Celestial kicks things off, focusing on the Charnel Kingdom and how they’ve become involved with none other than Arkhan the Black.

There’s far too much on this thrilling subject to talk about here, but the good news is that we’ll be revealing more about this series later in the month – keep an eye on Warhammer Community for a detailed look coming soon.

Warhammer Underworlds plays quite the part in this month’s issue, so our third and final pick is Dave Sanders’ regular column, Path to Victory. It’s a great read for anyone looking to brave the darkness of Direchasm with the two warbands included in the set.

Knowledge is power (and glory)

If you’re torn between the enlightened aelven quartet of Myari’s Purifiers and the depraved Hedonites known as the Dread Pageant, Dave has you covered. In addition to guidance on deckbuilding for each warband, Dave takes a detailed look at the strengths and weaknesses of each individual fighter and offers tactical insights for using them alongside one another to best effect.

Not only will you learn best practice for your warband of choice, but you’ll pick up a thing or two on how to defeat their boxed set rivals as well.

Before we leave you to patiently await the release of this month’s magazine, you may remember the Hobby Bingo challenge from December's issue (that’s 459 if you’re keeping count). We thought it would be fun to make a PDF of the Hobby Bingo sheet so that you can download a copy and update your progress over the course of the year. Simply download it here and get hobbying!
