BookOfYear Mar02 Others

Our countdown begins with two very different characters from the 41st Millennium. The lord of the Red Corsairs struggles to maintain control in Huron Blackheart: Master of the Maelstrom by Mike Brooks, while we witness the early days of Ibram Gaunt and his Tanith First in The Vincula Insurgency: Ghost Dossier 1 by Dan Abnett. Next, the irrepressible Gotrek Gurnisson stars in his latest adventure Soulslayer by Darius Hinks.

Then a quartet of character novels from the Horus Heresy pick apart the origins and legacies of four iconic figures. Sanguinius: The Great Angel by Chris Wraight and Mortarion: The Pale King by David Annandale examine these brother Primarchs in exacting detail, while Garro: Knight of Grey by James Swallow and Sigismund: The Eternal Crusader by John French bookend the Horus Heresy, examining the early origins and final fates of two legendary Space Marines.

In third place is a tale of secrecy and sedition from the author of The Infinite and The Divine.

That’s the answer the Inquisition is banking on as they strive to discover the past of the infamous Ork warlord, extracted from the mouth of the very grot whose supernatural luck has finally run out. Makari may not be the most reliable source, but his version of Ghazghkull’s rise is certainly the most entertaining.
