Studio Interview: How the Leviathan Space Marines Were Designed

Here’s some news you might have missed from the weekend: there’s a colossal launch box coming for the new edition of Warhammer 40,000. Called Leviathan, this boxed set is stuffed to the gunnels with incredible new plastic miniatures – among them a strike force of 25 deadly Space Marine veterans.

These are the crème de la crème, the elite of the elite, true avatars of war clad in ancient Tactical Dreadnought armour and festooned with the emblems and panoply of centuries of service. What we’re saying is, they look amazing. But these guys didn’t spring out of the warp fully formed – months of painstaking work went into each and every one. Here’s what the designers had to say.

On the Terminators, lead miniatures designer Jes explains: “There are a few touchstones with a Terminator suit that you can't ignore, that you have to keep - the idea that the carapace and backpack comes above the head, the very distinctive helmet, the huge plates. You have to keep all of those things. The trick then is to find out how you can keep it true to what it was, but make it a little bit better.”

The team have been keen to make sure that ‘everything that was recognisable and well-loved was brought to the modern design’. All this talk of ‘classic silhouettes’ is making us feel something…

There’s plenty more to come from Warhammer 40,000 in May, as we embark upon a series of faction focuses showing how your favourite force will fare in the new edition.
