The latest edition of Warhammer Age of Sigmar brings with it a cornucopia of fantastic rules for narrative gamers to enjoy. What’s more, every new battletome adds loads of Path to Glory rules which let you embark on dangerous quests, discover unexplored Territories, and buff your champions with dazzling heroic upgrades.
Battletome: Orruk Warclans is no exception, and their characterful rules cement their position as the cunning brutes of the Mortal Realms. In the Era of the Beast, they’re smashier and angrier than ever, going on epic tears of destruction. The new book – up for pre-order this weekend – allows you to reenact this rampage in your narrative play games.
If you caught yesterday’s Stormcast Eternals Path to Glory article, you’ll know their rules showcase their noble cause and propensity to return from death. Where the forces of Sigmar are focused on bringing order to new territories, orruks are quite the opposite. What use do roaming bands of orruks have for lands and holdings, anyway?
The Orruk Warclans Path to Glory focuses squarely on the things greenskins enjoy the most: visiting new places and meeting new people – AND SMASHING ‘EM INTO BITS! Sam Pearson, from the Warhammer Studio, explained it like this: “Their armies work a bit differently from others when it comes to their unique territories. Rather than having them themed around Orruk Warclans, they are instead themed around the other races of the Mortal Realms.”
Take this Chaos Dreadhold, for example.
“These are territories your armies have discovered, and you’ll choose when to ransack them for loot!” said Sam. Not only do these rules add to the ongoing story of your army, they also make for a stark contrast with the do-gooding Stormcast Eternals. Speaking of ransacking…
You might be wondering about that Tornado of Destruction battleplan mentioned above. In essence, your orruks are doing their level best to vandalise the buildings and shrines of their enemies for the glory of the great god of Destruction. In fact, Gorkamorka appreciates this sort of thing so much, he sometimes joins in the fun.
It’s all great fun. And if they’re good at it, your fledgling band of Orruks can grow larger and attract the attention of others who want to get stuck in.
Sam and the team wanted to “capture the rag-tag and bellicose nature of orruks. The Gathering of the Big Waaagh! rules allows you to start off with, say, a Kruleboyz army and slowly add in Ironjawz and Bonesplitterz units.”
“Later,” Sam added, “you’ll be able to call a Waaagh! before battle, which will allow you to use the Big Waaagh! rules alongside your dedicated army type rules.” How cool is that?
The veteran abilities your units earn are loads of fun, like these noisy Bonesplitterz boys who can give enemy Wizards a wicked headache.
Who knows, maybe some day your Waaagh! will grow large enough to attract the attention of a certain God of Earthquakes. Sam’s looking forward to “the mighty Kragnos leading all three subfactions into battle once the army has reached the lofty heights of 2,000 points on the Path to Glory roster...”
That’s when you know you’ve really made it.
You don’t have much longer to wait before you can take a good look at all the awesome Path to Glory options in the book. Pre-order Battletome: Orruk Warclans this Saturday and prepare to unleash your fury.
