We’ve seen dozens of expert tutorials on Warhammer+ about making miniatures beautiful with the awesome Citadel paint range, but how do Warhammer’s master painters choose the colours they’ll use? That’s the topic of today’s Citadel Colour Masterclass, in which Aidan takes us through the wild world of colour theory to make sure we’re not just painting with our hands – we’re painting with our minds.
As Aidan explains, "Colour theory is the system we use to categorise colours and understand how they relate to each other”. With its origins in the ancient work of Aristotle,* it's a science that affects a huge part of the Warhammer hobby, so getting the principles down pat is essential.
"We look at the fundamentals of colour theory, the three colour attributes, and some different colour schemes we can create using the colour wheel,” he explains, “and then how we can use colour theory to help us get better results from our painting.”
With a goal to help create fascinating colour schemes on everything from T’au Empire Fire Warriors to Chaos Daemons, this episode teaches you how to complement, contrast, and balance your colours – and ultimately create incredible colour schemes that really pop on the battlefield.
Nowhere is this better displayed than on everyone’s favourite Space Marines from the planet Macragge, the Ultramarines. Sporting a strongly contrasting colour scheme that’s morphed over the years from classic blue-and-yellow to a regal blue-and-gold, they exemplify not only the ways that simple colours can elevate each other, but also how they provide a bold canvas for adding smaller, fancier details.
