New to The Horus Heresy? Here’s Everything You’ll Need to Get Started

It’s here at last – the greatest conflict the Imperium has ever known. Warhammer: The Horus Heresy – Age of Darkness is coming to pre-order this weekend, and you won’t have to wait long to be able to recreate the epic battles of the 31st Millennium – brother against brother, Astartes against Astartes.

Whether you’re entirely new to the game or want a quick refresher, we’ve got just the video for you.

Warhammer: The Horus Heresy – Age of Darkness will seem familiar to fans of past editions of Warhammer 40,000, but with a few tweaks. Let’s go a little deeper, to make sure you don’t turn up to the war-torn battlefields of the 31st Millennium empty-handed.

To play, you’ll need the Warhammer: The Horus Heresy – Age of Darkness Rulebook, as well as the correct rulebook for your army. If you’re defending the Imperium with a Loyalist Legion, you’ll want the Liber Astartes: Loyalist Legiones Astartes Army Book, and if you’re fighting for the Warmaster, you’ll want the Liber Hereticus: Traitor Legiones Astartes Army Book

These are both one-stop shops for the Space Marines of each side, with rules for all the weapons and units available to the Legiones Astartes, as well as special abilities and unique units for nine full Legions each.

There are quite a few other factions roaming around the Age of Darkness – whether you’re repping the Cult Mechanicum, the Solar Auxilia, the Talons of the Emperor, or the daemonic forces of the Ruinstorm, your own army book will be arriving soon. Even the less prominent fighters of the Horus Heresy will be featured in a free Legacies of the Age of Darkness PDF, which will be available to download shortly after launch.

Once you’ve got your books, you’ll need the usual set of tabletop wargaming tools – with a few extras.

As normal, you’ll want lots of dice that you can roll to determine the results of bloody combat, as well as measuring devices to check range and movement. Warhammer: The Horus Heresy also uses scatter dice and templates to represent the effects of certain weapons – perfect for some of the heavier guns on your shiny new Contemptor.

On top of this, you’ll need a range of miniatures to represent your chosen army. There are 18 Space Marine Legions to choose from – if you’re having trouble deciding, you might want to check out our in-depth Legion Day reviews, including the indomitable Imperial Fists and the Warmaster’s own Sons of Horus.
