Have you ever wondered what it would be like to walk right into the Realm of Death and smash some ghosts in the face? Our friends at Carbon Studio did too, so they made a first-person virtual reality action game that’s as close as possible to that experience as you can get – and it’s out today.
We tracked down Paweł Nitta from Carbon Studio to learn more about the game itself. The team are huge fans of Warhammer, and they’ve been building Tempestfall for the last two years as a treat for fans all around the world.
As a VR game, Tempestfall is a completely new way to explore the Warhammer Age of Sigmar universe.
“Thanks to virtual reality, we are able to become the very characters we’re supposed to play, to see the world from their perspective, and find out how it would really feel to walk the realm of Shyish,” Paweł explains.
Upon donning the VR goggles, you’ll find yourself transported into the gleaming Sigmarite armour of a Stormcast Eternal.
“It’s all about immersion,” according to Paweł. “You’ll become a mighty Lord-Arcanum, giving you a sense of the power and strength these fearless warriors of Sigmar possess.”
You’ll wield your signature aetherstave, along with other weapons and potent magical abilities, to smash through your enemies in visceral fast-paced combat. When all else fails, the advanced physics system lets you take a more hands-on approach, grabbing attackers and tossing them around like big angry beanbags.
As the action takes place in Shyish, you can bet there will be dead things. Loads of them.
“The player will face hordes of Nighthaunts, but they come in all different types, like Glaivewraith Stalkers and Grimghast Reapers, plus other undead like Deathrattle Skeletons,” Paweł adds. “Even the Idoneth Deepkin might jump into the fray...”
Carbon Studio has worked closely with Games Workshop to ensure a thrilling story that stays true to the spirit of the Mortal Realms. The title of the game refers to a potent relic.
“It’s one of the most powerful and oldest artefacts in the entire Warhammer Age of Sigmar universe,” Paweł tells us. “And now it’s fallen into the hands of Pharan Ghast, a powerful Necromancer.”
It’s up to you to venture into Shyish and get it back, against the odds.
If these screenshots haven’t convinced you, Paweł’s excitement should send you over the edge.
“We hope everyone is going to have a great time bashing skulls and delivering justice in the name of Sigmar!”
Tempestfall will be available at 5pm (GMT) today on Steam VR, before launching on Viveport and Oculus Rift tomorrow. So grab your Aetherstave and prepare for some of the most immersive Nighthaunt-clobbering you’ve ever experienced.
