Welcome to the second part of our series looking at the best places to jump into the many and varied books available from Black Library. With more than a thousand novels to choose from plus audio dramas, novellas, short stories, and more, we wouldn’t blame you for needing a few pointers. After exploring the Astra Militarum previously, this time we’re heading down to the Mortal Realms and joining the forces of Order as they strive to banish Chaos, Death, and Destruction from their domains.
Many different races come together to make up Order’s forces, from world-weary humans to profit-minded duardin and learned, haughty aelves. Even within their own kinds, the differences between the characters from these races can be so great as to spawn a thousand worthy tales, so it’s no surprise that a great wealth of stories can be told about their exploits.
As Sigmar’s chosen heroes, the Stormcast Eternals are often at the forefront of history-making events across the realms, and many tales exist of their great deeds. To get a feel for what these immortal champions can accomplish, Sacrosanct & Other Stories should be your first port of call.
Following the Stormcast, their allies, and the many horrible monsters they battle on a daily basis, this compilation of short stories is the perfect way to learn all about the many factions at play in the Mortal Realms.
The lore of Warhammer Age of Sigmar is always moving forwards, with campaign books such as the Broken Realms series featuring realm-shaking events that are sure to change the balance of power forever. Discover where the cataclysmic Soul Wars began in the titular book and audiobook, chronicling the God of Death’s diabolical scheme to flood the Mortal Realms with death magic and bring about an eternal night.
As possibly the most famous duardin alive, and certainly one of the most storied, Gotrek Gurnisson is a legendary figure whose stories stretch back long into the annals of the World-that-Was. His journeys through the Mortal Realms begin in Realmslayer, a thrilling four-part audio drama that tells the story of Gotrek’s arrival in the Age of Sigmar. Also, the legendary Slayer is voiced by Brian Blessed, which should be reason enough to give it a listen.
His adventures then continue on the page in Ghoulslayer, as Gotrek and his aelven companion dive headfirst into the Realm of Death to seek the Undying King himself.
If the aelves of Hysh are more your cup of tea, lift the veil on the proud children of Tyrion and Teclis in Realm-lords. As the first book focusing on the Lumineth, it’s the best place to start learning all about their enlightened culture and the lands they inhabit.
