Warhammer Community Investigates – Which Is the Best Hammer in the Mortal Realms?

With an abundance of new arrivals for the Stormcast Eternals arriving for pre-order on Saturday, we’ve been thinking about hammers all week. They’re the iconic weapon of Sigmar’s chosen after all, and following much deliberation we’ve picked our favourites to give some very official, not-at-all made-up awards to.

We’ve already looked at why Bastian Carthalos is so awesome this week, but it bears repeating that he’s the kind of legend whom all the other legends obey. Such a powerful presence requires an equally impressive hammer, and Uskavar does not disappoint.

Coursing with the power of Skjordamar, one of Sigmar’s nine Great Bolts, this meteoric grandhammer is capable of evaporating enemy leaders and even striking down massive Monsters in a single blow. Pretty fitting for the Lord-Commander of the entire Hammers of Sigmar Stormhost, wouldn’t you agree?

Huge two-handed hammers are a common sight in the ranks of the Stormcast Eternals, but the latest arrivals are the coolest of them all. Hefted by the equally massive Annihilators, meteoric grandhammers are as destructive as the meteors they’re named after, and their owners love nothing more than cracking through the heavy armour of Blood Knights, Immortis Guard, and Ardboyz. The Annihilators are also available for pre-order this Saturday, so you can fill your armies with them soon.

Leave it to Khorne to one-up the standard hammer by attaching it to a giant chain, creating the vicious bloodflail. Used by Bloodthirsters to crush piles of skulls* from long range, it’s a truly monstrous weapon that’s one of the most terrifying things in the Blood God’s arsenal.

Although their ways of war favour speed and grace over brute power, the Lumineth Realm-lords are no strangers to carrying whacking great hammers onto the battlefield.

While the Alarith Stoneguard’s stone mallets are the size of a full-grown man, it’s the stoneheart worldhammers carried by Alarith Spirits of the Mountain that truly inspire awe in the hearts of all hammer-fans. Capable of creating immense shockwaves when struck against the ground, they’re far and away the biggest and heaviest hammers seen throughout the Mortal Realms – at least, as far as anyone knows.

Now here’s a test of your history chops – Harry the Hammer graced the cover of the first-ever Warhammer rulebook and pre-dates even Sigmar. He had many of the hobbies that still motivate hammer-swingers today, like smashing the jaws off the undead, which should come as no surprise given he’s a Chaos Champion himself.

You can’t discuss hammers without inevitably comparing them against the Warhammer itself – Ghal Maraz. Named Skull-splitter in the Khazalid tongue, Sigmar’s own hammer is such an iconic part of Warhammer that it appears in nearly every part of the hobby, including Black Library’s own logo. These days it’s carried by the Celestant-Prime, who continues to dispense the God-King’s justice across all corners of the Mortal Realms.

Don’t forget that this weekend is packed with tons of new releases for the Stormcast Eternals, including Bastian Carthalos and the Annihilators with meteoric grandhammers. We’ll be taking a closer look at another hammer-like weapon from the Stormcasts’ armoury tomorrow, this time owned by the sombre Knight-Relictors.

* You’d think this would make it much harder to stack them on the Skull Throne, but we like to imagine Khorne uses the little bits to fill in the gaps.
