Our Dragon Week takeover continues, and having seen the long history of Warhammer dragon models yesterday, today we’re delving into the Black Library vaults to investigate some of our favourite books about these lords of the sky – and a few with slightly more tenuous links.
We begin in the World-that-Was with the legendary Dwarf Slayer, Gotrek. After dealing with Skaven (in Skavenslayer) and Daemons (in Daemonslayer), he would eventually take on a dragon (in, yes, you guessed it, Dragonslayer). With a legendary creature in front of them and an army of Orcs behind, how will Gotrek and his human companion Felix get out of this predicament?
Staying in the Old World, Caledor tells the epic tale of the civil war between the Dark Elves and the High Elves. If you can’t unleash dragons when you’re fighting your dark brethren, then when can you unleash them?
Oh wait, how about Dwarfs? With the War of Vengeance in full swing, Master of Dragons sees the High Elves use the ultimate weapon against their former allies. But, of course, only an Elf would be so arrogant as to consider themself a master of dragons.
Our final entry in the World-that-Was is Van Horstmann. We’re sure everyone knew that one person at school who was super smart and for whom everything came really easy. In the case of Egrimm van Horstmann, not only is that guy a wizard – he’s also trying to awaken a dragon that has been imprisoned underneath the College of Light.*
Even though Krondys, Karazai, and the Stormdrake Guard are coming, there aren’t any dragon novels set in the Mortal Realms – yet.** However, we do have the Overlords of the Iron Dragon. Not only does the Kharadron Overlords’ skyvessel have the word “Dragon” in its name, that certainly looks like a dragon on the cover to us. They both like flying and gold… who will come out on top?
The Iron Dragon has always been one of the unluckiest skyvessels – in Shiprats, you can see what happened when it was infested with rodents.
In the 41st Millennium, our advice is to stay away from anything with the word “dragon” in their name. Whether that’s the C’tan Shard of the Void Dragon or the Dragon Warriors, who are archenemies of the Salamanders Space Marines. Find out how their animosity began in the novel Salamander.
The Black Dragons might be loyal to the Imperium, but they’re still mutated Space Marines from the cursed 21st Founding. Read all about how they wage war in The Death of Antagonis.
That’s just a taste of the dragon-y goodness that we’ve seen so far from the Black Library. Head over to Facebook to let us know which is your favourite of these stories, and sign up for our newsletter so that you get all of the Black Library updates – both dragon-full and dragon-free.
* Hopefully, this won’t impact any games of Dungeon Bowl taking place.
** They have only just returned to the Mortal Realms, after all...
