Warhammer Underworlds – Here’s how to get started in the new edition

The new edition of Warhammer Underworlds marks a seismic shift, with a host of changes that streamline the game and make it more accessible for new players. This is the best time to jump on board if you’ve ever been curious about this tight mixture of miniatures and cardplay.

The core rules have been rewritten to be clearer and more concise, but they’re still deep and engaging. All previous cards are being left behind, so you might be wondering where to start either as a brand new player or a returning veteran.

Warhammer Underworlds: Embergard is the heart of the new edition, and comes with everything you need to play: two warbands and their cards, plus tokens, dice, a double-sided board, and four Rivals decks. These represent each of the four core playstyles – Strike, Take and Hold, Mastery, and Flex, and they combine in unique ways with every warband in the game. Warbands now have warscrolls with unique actions and a suggested playstyle, but you can pair any warband with every deck in search of unique combos.

It’s important to note that Embergard will be the core set for the entire edition of the game – while there will be a regular supply of new warbands and new decks, there will not be new-season boxed sets as in previous years.

All 58 warbands from the current edition of the game will be getting updated rules – that’s warscroll cards and fighter cards. Sixteen of these will get physical cards which accompany the recently revealed Grand Alliance boxes, and the rest you can download at launch for free. You can pair them all with any of the four Rivals decks from Embergard, and any future Rivals deck release, so you can be playing with your friends in minutes.

Deck-building is also still in the game, and those looking for this kind of experience can look forward to a revamped Nemesis mode which we’ll be covering next week. For people who just want to get started as quickly as possible, the new approach to warbands and decks makes it easier than ever to pick up a warband and start playing.

The Warhammer Underworlds: Embergard core set is available for pre-order on Saturday, and next week we’ll have more news from the new edition.
