Tournament season is upon us once more, and as this edition of Warhammer Age of Sigmar matures and grows – and as more factions receive vital updates – the results are intriguing. The Warhammer Studio has been chewing through the results of the Las Vegas Open, the biggest matched play event of the year so far.
Design Lead Matt once again sat down with Ben from Warhammer TV to talk about the results from LVO, as well as the latest General’s Handbook and a little bit about the future of the game.
This year’s LVO winners are a real mixture. The event was won by Jiwan Noah Singh’s Beasts of Chaos, with a list constructed before their new battletome came out, while the runner-up was Nicholas Walters with a hog-heavy Ironjawz line-up.
In third place was Kaleb Walters, with a mostly-mortal Disciples of Tzeentch list backed up by a savage spirit, and fourth went to Gavin Grigar’s shooting-heavy Cities of Sigmar list.
Jiwan’s list makes great use of the massive hordes Beasts of Chaos can field – which will be getting savage new tricks in their latest book. His flock of 30 Tzaangors counts as 90 models when claiming objectives thanks to the Expert Conquerers battalion, and can become even more formidable within range of their Herdstone.
Nicholas’ Ironjawz are a finely tuned iteration of an archetypal Bloodtoofs list, packed with Gore-gruntas who take advantage of their Hunt and Crush trait – plus the Mighty Destroyers command, issued by a muscled Megaboss – to surge forward and dominate the combat phase with clever movement.
Kaleb makes smart use of a bound Krondspine Incarnate to present a strong melee threat which also prevents his opponents from retreating, all while peppering them with pyroclastic Tzeentchian magic from his Acolytes and sorcerous heroes.
Gavin’s army is drawn from the Free City of Tempest's Eye, and packed with ranged units – both Freeguild and the city’s Kharadron coalition partners – that can be buffed by his Hawk-eyed general. The Battlemage in question can even conjure a Horrorghast, to ensure shaken units suffer extra losses to Battleshock.
In the video, Matt goes into detail about how these forces function and how they triumphed in the current meta. He then moves onto how he expects the next season to be shaped around the new Galletian Champions rules in the latest General’s Handbook, predicting that Fyreslayers, Cities of Sigmar, and Ogor Mawtribes will all benefit from the boost.
That’s it from metawatch for this week, but we’ll have more coverage from Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer Age of Sigmar throughout the year. Stay tuned to tune your tactics!
