With the upcoming release of the new edition of Warhammer Age of Sigmar, the Warhammer+ team have been pumping out lots of Mortal Realms content, including battle reports, coverage on the state of the eight realms, and painting tips for Skaventide.
They’re taking a little break this week to refocus on the grim darkness of the far future, with both a Battle Report and Loremasters episode all about Warhammer 40,000.
This week, Battle Report heads to the planet of Targus VIII where Space Marines of the Raven Guard Chapter are sneaking up on an Ork settlement to take down a particularly troublesome Beastboss, in a Combat Patrol game of Warhammer 40,000.
Taking the Squighog reins in this game was Warhammer Community’s Coinmaster Lydia, who took some time to tell us how she approached the battle…
Warhammer Community: So, Lydia, you’ve been playing an awful lot of Spearhead for Warhammer Age of Sigmar recently, and now we see you on Warhammer+ playing a game of Combat Patrol for Warhammer 40,000. What is it about the smaller scale games you enjoy so much?
Lydia: You know what, the smaller games are a great jumping off point for playing much larger games later on. You can paint a smaller force and get straight into the action but also have a solid base painted for painting a much bigger game. Also, sometimes, I might want to paint a small force and get a feeling of a faction but not paint a huge army. Combat Patrol and Spearhead are just perfect for this – it’s why I love playing them so much.
I mean, that and the action is so much more frenetic and fun – you get stuck straight in. No posturing, no positioning – just fight!
WarCom: Everyone in the Warhammer Community office knows you’re a big Orks fan – why do the hordes of Gork and Mork appeal to you so much?
Lydia: WAAAGH! Orks are just great, right? It’s impossible not to have fun playing games with them. You’re either smashing the snot out of people and winning the game or smashing the snot out of people and you’re not winning – either way, you know the Orks are all having fun.
There’s a huge amount of variety in the army, so you can choose the flavour of snot-smashing you’re going to deliver. Mechanised stomping, speed freeks, all da big gunz, or just a good ol’ fashioned green tide. The Beastsnaggas of Morgrim’s Butchas we used on Battle Report were actually borrowed from mad hobbyist and friend of the show Doug Fazzini – it’s the one flavour of Ork I haven’t painted yet, but after this game, I need me some of those Squighog Boyz.
Whatever you do, make sure you tune in to Battle Report this week to see the whirlwind of Orky violence that is Lydia controlling the Beast Snaggas on the tabletop!
Over on Loremasters our presenter Alex has a treatise on that most Warhammer 40,000 of combat accessories – the jump pack. Strapping powerful turbines on the back of soldiers to send them leaping into combat is a time-honoured tradition in the Imperium – they’ve been doing it since the Great Crusade and have honed their reckless leaping to a fine art over 10,000 years.
This episode of Loremasters covers the complete history of jump packs, from their inception and creation, their use in engagements, and all sorts of other juicy details plucked from the pages of many a Codex and White Dwarf.
You can watch all of this and plenty more right now as part of a Warhammer+ subscription. Subscribe and you’ll get access to the Warhammer Vault, a digital collection of White Dwarfs and lore from previous publications. If you subscribe for a year, you will also get the choice of one of two awesome free miniatures.
