Spoiler alert: If you’re not up to date on Interrogator, you might want to tread carefully – there are some mild reveals in this article!
The gritty eighth episode of Interrogator, Famous Last Words, lands on Warhammer TV today, the penultimate instalment of Season 1 – and it’s a banger. Expect some serious twists and turns as Jurgen’s investigation races violently towards its conclusion.
Let’s start with the bare facts. Heroth was once a member of the same inquisitorial warband as Jurgen and Baldur, and it seems that the main reason he had his place in Inquisitor Bellona’s inner circle was his nature as a blank.
Whether they are called blanks, untouchables, or pariahs, these psychic nulls are humans cursed with a rare and repellant mutation – they register absolutely no presence in the warp and are to all intents and purposes soulless. This has a few notable side effects. Their presence is physically repulsive to those around them, as if wrapped in an aura of unease. More usefully to the Imperium at large, their untouchable nature interferes with psychic powers. A psyker or daemon can gain no purchase on the mind of an untouchable or those very close to them. So for Jurgen, Heroth’s presence is physically painful… potentially even deadly.
We get a sense of Heroth’s nature back in episode 7, when Jurgen opens the mind of the Ecclesiarchy preacher. As Heroth gets closer to the priest, his vision becomes blurry and strained. Pariahs are no joke.
You’ll notice that Jurgen is never standing really close to him in any of the scenes they share – keeping him at more than arm’s length and leaning back. Even when they were on the same team, Jurgen could barely stand Heroth’s presence. In one scene in Episode 6, he warns Heroth to keep his distance.
Despite how unpleasant the presence of a pariah might be, they are undeniably useful – especially to the Officio Assassinorum and the Inquisition. They can’t be psychically controlled or corrupted in the usual way, and they offer a modicum of protection to their masters. As Jurgen is a psyker and Heroth is a pariah, things will surely get tense as they draw nearer to each other.
