This week on Warhammer+, five presenters unite for the first part of a two-part Warhammer Underworlds Clash on Battle Report! They’ve painted their own warbands – and here’s what inspired them…
Ed: The Emberwatch
I'm a big fan of Sigmar's finest and I leapt at the chance to paint a new warband. After looking around at my collection, I realised I hadn't painted anything with black armour for a while… The best thing about black is that it works with pretty much any colour, which lets me bring in yellow golds, red cloaks, and blue gems for a simple triadic scheme. One of my favourite parts was getting some rough texture with some heavy stippling. As I only had three models, I spent more time refining the highlights and adding some character to Ardorn's face.
Alex: Zikkit’s Tunnelpack
I really enjoyed painting Zikkit's Tunnelpack because the models are so full of character. For the majority of the fighters, I stuck to dull bronzes and browns, even the red of the clothes is on the darker side as these Skaven spend their time in dusty, dimly lit tunnels. This contrasts with the bright warpstone glow coming from the rest of the models with flames, weapons, and warpstone all blazing bright with a corrupted glow. I imagine their victims first seeing the glowing eyes in the gloom before the Tunnelpack descends upon them!
Simon: The Jaws of Itzl
The Jaws of Itzl are my choice of warband as not only do I love playing as aggressive, bloodthirsty warriors, I love painting bright colours – and I’d been really inspired by my friend Matt’s vibrant Golden Demon entries. When painting them, I concentrated on the gold first as I knew this would take the longest, but once done, it was time to reach for those Contrast paints! Over an undercoat of Grey Seer, I painted my Contrasts on, being careful to prevent the paints from pooling. The weapons and shields were painted a jade colour as a strong spot colour. Shoutout to Pylar Glacier – the blue skin on the Saurus is just three coats of it and nothing else!
Josh: Grandfather’s Gardeners
The followers of Nurgle are always a delight to paint, and the Grandfather's Gardeners definitely had me feeling green-thumbed... And that's not from spilling any pots of Plaguebearer Flesh! This warband has five evocative fighters with bugs, boils, flies, and festering cauldrons, making them both easy to paint with Contrast paints, and a pleasure to pick out the details. I unified the miniatures with a light drybrush to make sure that gross greenish yellow was present on all parts of the warband. Spreading the sickly tones around, just like Papa Nurgle!
Nick: The Emberwatch and Zikkit’s Tunnelpack
I was the event organiser, but when everyone else in the office was painting warbands, I wanted to get in on the fun! I’ve always loved Stormcast Eternals, so painting the Emberwatch was a real joy. I sprayed them with Retributor Armour before starting to paint them up as the Hammers of Sigmar; it’s the traditional colour scheme and there’s just something about heroic warriors in gold and blue that I love.
As for the Skaven, I followed Alex’s advice and sprayed them with Grey Seer. All areas on the model were painted with Contrast paints and then highlighted traditionally, with glazes of Rhinox Hide, really making them look like they’ve been down a grimy mine for ages.
Thanks guys! Part 1 of the Warhammer Underworlds Clash Part 1 is on this week’s episode of Battle Report, exclusively on Warhammer TV.
Also on Warhammer+ this week
We’ve managed to wrangle Alex out of the Mortal Realms just long enough to make another incredible episode of Loremasters. This week, we find out more about the history of the T’au Empire’s Third Sphere Expansion and the threat it poses to the Imperium…
